Thirty Years Without the Guitar, Then Two Songs a Day

Andy Anderson led worship for a long time. Many, many years, the way he tells it. Then rheumatoid arthritis showed up and took the guitar out of his hands, and he says everything else went with it. The faith. The gift. Jesus. He turned his back on all three and stayed gone.

That was roughly thirty years ago. He’s back now, and not in a careful, test-the-water kind of way. Two or more songs a day, he says. Guitar again, keyboard too, and more writing than at any point in his entire life. His own phrase for it is “almost miraculously,” which sounds like press-release talk until you remember the arthritis. He had to learn the guitar all over again. What happens when he plays it now, he calls a blessing past anything he understands.

The project he does all this under is Servants of Worship. And “David’s Prayer (Psalm 25)” tells you pretty much everything about what that project is for.

What Psalm 25 is asking for

Nearly everything Servants of Worship release is scripture, and a good chunk of it goes in untouched, straight off the page. This one takes the part of Psalm 25 where David asks to be shown God’s ways, led in truth, and then says he’ll wait on it all day long. The verses hang on those lines and keep coming back to them. Same plea, same call to God three times in a row, then the plea again. On paper it reads like a man repeating himself because the repeating is the point. Which, for a prayer, it usually is.

Anderson steps out of the psalm for the chorus. Those words are his. A plea to be made a faithful servant and pulled closer, over and over, right through to the outro. Yeah, that’s basically the band name sung as a prayer. You could call it on the nose. I read it as a guy who stopped serving for three decades and wants it on record that he isn’t leaving again.

Two songs a day, every day

Servants of Worship say they write in a range of styles so there’s something for a range of tastes, and that new songs go up on their Spotify and YouTube daily. Daily. Most songwriters would burn out at that pace, and Anderson is doing it after thirty years off and a disease that took his playing away.

Fans apparently tell them they can picture the psalmist singing these exactly as they were made. Kind of a big thing for a worship act to hear. The psalms were songs long before they were text, and Psalm 25 in particular is someone in trouble asking for a way through. A worship leader who lost the guitar, the faith and thirty years, then got the guitar back… he probably has more claim on that one than most of us.

Whether the recording carries all of that is something you’ll want to hear for yourself. Put David’s Prayer (Psalm 25) on, give it a few minutes, and see where it leaves you.
